Solid hard difficulty. 27-clue puzzles typically resolve through subset patterns - naked pairs, pointing pairs, and the occasional X-Wing - without requiring chain logic.
54 empty cells. The 27-clue band is the upper edge of hard - dense enough to require pencil marks, structured enough that subsets carry most of the solving weight.
27-clue puzzles are the sweet spot for solvers who have outgrown medium difficulty but are not yet ready to drill X-Wings. Every puzzle in this band teaches subset technique without overwhelming the candidate space.
Start with full pencil marks. Sweep each row, column, and box for naked pairs - two cells in a unit that share the same two candidates eliminate those digits from every other cell in that unit. Then scan for pointing pairs across box-row and box-column intersections. By the time those eliminations are exhausted, most of the grid will resolve through hidden singles.

This page is part of our Sudoku by clue count cluster. The fewer clues a puzzle has, the more advanced the techniques required. The proven minimum is 17 clues - see 17-clue Sudoku for the famous case. For the matching difficulty band see Hard Sudoku.
Yes - they are the gentlest entry point into hard difficulty. You will need pencil marks and you will need to recognize naked and pointing pairs, but you almost never need X-Wings or chains at this clue count.
Pointing pairs. The 27-clue grid has just enough box density that two-candidate intersections appear frequently, and each one eliminates candidates from a full row or column section.
A 27-clue Sudoku puzzle starts with 27 digits already placed in the grid out of 81 cells, leaving 54 cells for you to fill. Lower clue counts generally mean harder puzzles because you have less starting information.
Most experienced solvers complete a 27-clue puzzle in 15-25 minutes. Beginners may take significantly longer at this clue count, especially if pencil marks are required.
In our classification, 27-clue puzzles are rated hard. The exact difficulty also depends on which solving techniques are required - clue position matters as much as clue count.
